Luonto Furniture

FOUNDED IN FINLAND, 1964

In 1964 Pentti Viitala created Luonto with the idea that high quality furniture should be available at fair prices. While the company has grown substantially in its 56 years of business, this one simple word has been passed from one generation to the next and remains the foundation of everything we do: quality.

For Luonto, quality is not just about raw materials but also the skilled craftsmen, manufacturing processes, support staff, design and comfort. Quality is the full package and that is what Luonto aims to deliver.

To this day Luonto Furniture remains family owned and operated, enabling them to stay true to their beliefs. Maintaining their standards throughout the decades is what has and will keep their business moving forward for generations to come. Their commitment to quality at Luonto Furniture empowers them to be transparent in every aspect. They want to make every detail of their furniture, down to the frame, available to our customers so they are 100% confident in what they are purchasing.

On average, Luonto employees have worked with them for over 20 years. A testament to the pride they take in their work and the level of professionalism and experience they are fortunate to have in their workforce.

They pride ourselves on the ways they’ve developed our manufacturing processes to be clean and safe for their employees as well as for the environment. The sustainable processes are deeply rooted in Finnish culture and have been developed over the history of their business, practices which they certainly believe support their mission of quality.

They put their teams to the ultimate test by focusing on design with function, aiming to bring you the most exciting furniture available. With their experience and ingenuity, they’ve designed the products that they’re excited to present to you!

RESEARCH + DESIGN

The development team is made up of experienced individuals who specialize in specific areas of production. A group complimenting one another and able to work together to understand the strengths and limitations of every aspect of production. The R&D team excels at finding solutions and achieving their goals.

FRAME CUTTING + ASSEMBLY

"Our framework is clean, strong and built to last"

Utilizing CNC technology to achieve pinpoint accuracy, frames are cut then assembled by hand with careful attention to detail. Water-based glue is used in every wooden joint to ensure the best bonding. They only use the highest grade raw materials so their framework is clean, strong and built to last.

FOAM GLUING

Their solid foam cores are wrapped with Dacron to creating a comfort layer between the upholstery and foam. The gluing is an important step as it prevents the material from separating thus avoiding any future lumping.

SEWING

Known for their attention to detail, their artisans machine sew every stitch of your sofa to perfection. Whether surging hidden edges to prevent fraying or stitching details critical to the design, their sewing department makes it happen.

UPHOLSTERY CUTTING

They have found through experience that technology cannot always match the quality of their artisans as they possess the touch and feel that machines cannot replicate. All top grain leathers and patterned upholsteries are cut by hand.

UPHOLSTERING

It’s during the upholstering phase where the piece begins to look recognizable. Their team of upholsterers are tough and they work to ensure each piece is precisely fitted and perfect.

SUSTAINABILITY

Their sustainable manufacturing processes are part of their heritage. Finland maintains very strict environmental standards which they have grown to live by. Roughly 80% of the country is lake and forest which puts a big emphasis on sustainability in their culture. This is not something they do to be on trend but rather it’s done simply because it’s who they are and where they come from.

Their sustainability efforts begin at the start of the manufacturing process – the raw material. Owning Viitala Forest, their family timber business, they understand exactly where our materials come from. They mainly harvest Nordic Spruce and Birch to be used in their sofa frames. The life cycle of one of their forests is roughly 80 years and when it’s harvested the trees are replaced for future use.

Throughout their production process they produce roughly four thousand pounds of wood waste daily. Instead of writing it off as waste, they covert the by-product into pellets. It’s then used in wood-fired ovens to heat all three of our factories, local schools, and a local town.

To keep their factory clean, once their design team has perfected their foam core shape, the template is sent to our supplier. This ensures their foam shape is accurate 100% of the time and prevents foam waste from entering the factory.

By building a high quality product they are able to consume less total resources, while keeping up with the demands of life in your home. Every product is engineered with attention to detail, resulting in fewer claims. Requiring less resources needed for repairs, maintenance, service dispatches and replacements. Their furniture’s durability and length of life empowers them to reduce their overall impact on their environment.

With these methods they minimize their carbon footprint, secure their longevity and deliver fine functional furniture to you that can endure the demands of your lifestyle.
